Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
