Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
